The CNC machinist technician program contains a blend of classroom lectures and practical shop sessions using the latest technology. In the first term of the program, emphasis is put on learning the fundamentals of machining in topics such as engineering drawing, trade math, metallurgy, precision measuring instruments, lathe, mill, and grinder machines.
In the second Co-op Term, you will practice your knowledge in a real world manufacturer. In this course, students will become familiar with all aspects of safety that must be complied with when working in a Machine Shop environment. The course will focus on safe work practices, hazardous materials and WHMIS regulations, WorkSafeBC requirements, fire safety, as well as the proper methods of lifting and moving objects.
Students must complete this course before participating in any shop floor activities. Prerequisite s : No prerequisites are required for this course.
In this course students will learn the necessary mathematic skills they need to support machining operations. The mathematical knowledge students will acquire during this course will support all subjects covered in the machinist trades training programs.
This course guides students through the process of reading and interpreting basic engineering drawings. Students will learn to effectively communicate by reading and creating sketches of an object in several views. Also the students will be able to describe fits and tolerances. In this course students will learn to use and maintain basic hand tools according to safety requirements. Students will select, use and properly maintain layout and measuring tools and gauges.
Students will learn to identify fasteners and their application. Both metric and imperial measurement systems will be used. In this course, students will learn how to safely use a drill press, power saw, grinding machine and hydraulic press to perform machining operations to drawing specifications. In this course, students will learn engine lathes and basic lathe operations.
The focus of the course will be on providing students with hands on experience and basic expertise in various lathe operations. In this course, students learn the basic skills needed to operate vertical and horizontal milling machines including tooling, appropriate cutting speeds, feed, depth of cut, accessories and holding devices.
The course also will cover the set-up procedure for general machine operation, and explore the causes of cutter failure. In this course, students learn how to cut internal and external threads using an engine lathe. They will work with multiple types of thread forms to achieve different thread designations. In this course, students will learn to use rotary tables and indexing devices to perform milling machine operations. They will learn to set up accessories for the milling machine to cut radii, hexagonal and pentagonal shapes according to specifications.
In this course, students will learn about different types of metals and their chemical, mechanical and physical properties. Students will learn to identify steel and common metals, and modify steel properties through various heat treating processes. In this course, students will learn how to select the correct lubricants and hydraulic fluids for various types of equipment. Students will be introduced to the different types of bearings, seals and gaskets found in machines.
The course covers lubrication requirements of varying types of bearings. Students will also select cutting fluids for specific machining applications. In this course, students learn the basics about precision surface grinding. Students will select the correct grinding wheels for specific applications, identify methods of surface grinding and articulate the advantages of each method.
